The Wairarapa Dragon Boat Club
The Wairarapa Dragon Boat Club was founded in 2009 to encourage breast cancer survivors to participate in an international movement inspired by the research of Canadian sports medicine specialist Dr.Don McKenzie. He proved that hard repetitive physical exercise reduced or eliminated lymphedema.
Before long several family and friends wished to join the Club and now an open membership allows everyone to benefit from fitness, wellbeing, camaraderie, competition, social interaction and teamwork.
The Club is very grateful to the Trust House Foundation who has supported the Club over many years. In 2010 their generosity enabled us to purchase a new international standard dragon boat and that gave us the confidence to purchase three more. Henley Lake is now a favourite destination for teams in the Wellington/Taranaki/Hawkes Bay region to enjoy our regattas.
Our yearly goals is attending the National Dragon Boat Regatta and the Trust has encouraged and supported us in our endeavours in the years since.
Membership is open to men and women of all ages, and children over the age of 12years. Having such a blend of ages is unusual in many sports and dragon boating is great place to continue to have sport in your life.
