Blind & Low Vision NZ supports those who are blind or have low vision with all aspects of life. Giving them the resources they need to live life without limits.
Trust House kindly supported us by helping fund one of our counsellor’s salaries. We employ counsellors all over the country to provide a free counselling service to adults who are struggling to come to terms with sight loss. It is often a traumatic and physiologically demanding time for people and not everyone has a support network in place. Exactly why it is important for us to be there to help them get through it. Depression and anxiety can effect anyone but research has shown that rates can be nearly 3 times higher in those with a visual disability. Our highly trained and specialised counsellors work with people listening, communicating then developing the tools they need. Enabling individuals to combat the isolation and anxiety that can come from such a significant life change.
This is not only beneficial for the person receiving the counselling as a healthier community is happier community. By helping to restore the confidence of people who have lost sight the counsellors are building roots into the community. Instead of staying at home uncertain and down people who are blind and low vision have the motivation to go out and be part of the community. Bringing a range of experiences and unique experiences to everyday life that is crucial to a vibrant diverse community.
